The New Syracuse Library – Making the Dream a Reality
draw
Welcome to the Syracuse Library Foundation website! We are very excited that our dream of a new library will actually become a reality, thanks to the generous donations of people in our community.

Our goal is to keep you informed of our progress towards the construction and completion of the new library in Syracuse, which will serve all of the residents in the District 27 area.

As most of you know, the current library, which opened in 1934, is inaccessible to those who are physically handicapped. We have no elevator and the only access to our library requires going up stairs. We have also outgrown the small library, and there are many repairs and updates needed to meet the needs of our community. These were the main reasons we started to pursue building a new library in 2001.

Initially, we had planned to build the library to the east of the current library on a lot that was purchased and donated to the Foundation. However, the extreme elevation change on the lot made it impossible for us to have the library on the main floor entry. When the opportunity presented itself to build on a more level site that was in the heart of the downtown, we knew it was the perfect solution.

The new library will be located next to Town and Country Pharmacy on 5th Street, where the former Thrivent Financial building was located. After having an architect walk through and complete an analysis of the existing building, it became apparent that it would be very expensive for us to renovate and add on to the existing building. Since keeping the library on one level is a priority, we decided to tear down the existing building, which would allow us to build a beautiful one-story building that will welcome people as they enter the downtown area.

The next steps include completing the preliminary designs and the building cost estimates. This will help us determine our need for additional grants and/or donations. If all goes as we hope, we will break ground on the new library in the summer of 2011, and will donate the library to the City upon its completion.

Ground breaking took place 6/1/2011
